Sarah Ludford MEP

Strasbourg's mayor has a lot to answer for

4.49.29pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 15th May 2006

Commenting ahead of tonight's appearance by the Mayor of Strasbourg in front of the European Parliament's Budgets Committee; Sarah Ludford MEP, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Europe, said:

"The Mayor has some rather pressing matters to deal with this evening, not least the swindle of the century that his city has perpetrated upon the European Parliament."

"We will be particularly anxious to hear how whether there is any substance to two particular criticisms regarding this affair; firstly, that the parliamentary authorities were asleep on the job by letting this go unnoticed for so long and secondly, that some MEPs are cosily prepared to settle for Strasbourg as they do rather well by filling their pockets with travel expenses."
