Commissioner Byrne's plans on smoking unwelcome

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 22nd Sep 2003

Speaking to Liberal Democrat Conference this morning Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP urged the EU to get on with its real work, not waste energy on proposals such as banning smoking in local pubs and restaurants.

"The EU has crucial work to do and must not get distracted. Security, justice and prosperity are the priorities, not meddling in national issues. I'm afraid I have to say to Commissioner Byrne: Stick this idea in your pipe and smoke it."
